The record, as it happens

Most of what passes for news is a summary of something else. We are interested in the other kind: reporting that starts with a document nobody has read, a number nobody has checked, or a person nobody has asked. That work is slower and it does not always produce a story. When it does, you will find it here.

What we cover

Five sections, chosen because they are where power actually moves: politics, business, technology, culture and the climate. We would rather publish fewer stories and stand behind all of them than fill a homepage every hour.

Video is treated as reporting, not decoration. If a story is better told on camera, it is filmed rather than illustrated.

How we work

Every story carries a byline and a timestamp. When we change a published story in any way that matters, we say so. Our editorial standards set out how we source, verify and correct, and our corrections policy explains what happens when we get something wrong.
