Pathophysiology of Conductive Hearing Loss: Sound Obstruction Mechanism
Conductive hearing loss occurs when sound waves are prevented from efficiently traveling through the outer ear canal or middle ear structures to the inner ear.
Here is a breakdown of the physiological mechanism shown in the diagram:
1. Outer & Middle Ear Division: Sound waves enter through the pinna into the ear canal, targeting the tympanic membrane.
2. Mechanical Blockage: Pathologies at the level of the ear canal or tympanic membrane (such as impacted cerumen, foreign body, fluid, or perforation) obstruct incoming acoustic waves.
3. Weakened Signal Transmission: Because acoustic energy is attenuated at the point of blockage, only a weakened mechanical signal reaches the ossicles, oval window, and cochlea.
4. Preserved Inner Ear Function: The cochlea, vestibular apparatus, and auditory nerve remain anatomically intact and capable of processing sound if signal amplification is provided.
Identifying conductive barriers early allows for effective medical, surgical, or restorative interventions!
