9 Common Fungal Infections

Fungal infections can affect the skin, nails, scalp, mouth, and genital area. Many are mild and treatable, but some can spread, recur, or need prescription treatment.

⠀

🟣 1. Athlete’s Foot

➟ Athlete’s foot (tinea pedis) commonly affects the skin between the toes or on the soles

➟ It can cause itching, peeling, cracking, burning, or redness

➟ Keeping the feet dry and using an appropriate antifungal treatment usually helps

⠀

🟣 2. Ringworm of the Body

➟ Ringworm (tinea corporis) is a fungal skin infection, not a worm

➟ It often causes a circular, itchy, scaly rash with a raised border

➟ It can spread through skin contact, shared towels, clothing, or infected animals

⠀

🟣 3. Jock Itch

➟ Jock itch (tinea cruris) affects the groin and inner thighs

➟ The rash may be itchy, red, scaly, and well-defined

➟ Heat, sweating, tight clothing, and moisture can make it worse

⠀

🟣 4. Toenail Fungus

➟ Fungal nail infection (onychomycosis) can make nails thick, yellow, brittle, crumbly, or distorted

➟ Toenails are affected more often than fingernails

➟ Treatment may require topical or oral antifungal medicine and can take months

⠀

🟣 5. Scalp Ringworm

➟ Scalp ringworm (tinea capitis) is more common in children

➟ It can cause scaling, itching, broken hairs, or patchy hair loss

➟ Oral antifungal treatment is usually needed because creams alone do not adequately treat scalp infection

⠀

🟣 6. Oral Thrush

➟ Oral thrush is caused by overgrowth of Candida yeast

➟ It may cause creamy white patches on the tongue or inside the mouth, soreness, or altered taste

➟ Risk is higher after antibiotics, with inhaled steroids, dentures, diabetes, or weakened immunity

⠀

🟣 7. Skin-Fold Candidiasis

➟ Candida can grow in warm, moist skin folds, such as under the breasts, abdomen, groin, or armpits

➟ The area may become bright red, sore, itchy, and moist

➟ Keeping skin folds dry and treating the yeast infection can help

⠀

🟣 8. Vaginal Yeast Infection

➟ Vaginal candidiasis commonly causes itching, soreness, redness, and thick white discharge

➟ It is not usually considered a sexually transmitted infection

➟ Recurrent or unusual symptoms should be medically assessed because other vaginal conditions can look similar

⠀

🟣 9. Tinea Versicolor

➟ Tinea versicolor is caused by overgrowth of Malassezia yeast on the skin

➟ It can cause lighter, darker, or pinkish finely scaly patches, often on the chest, back, shoulders, or neck

➟ The colour changes may take time to return to normal even after the infection is treated

⠀

🟣 How to Reduce the Risk

➟ Keep skin folds and feet clean and dry

➟ Change sweaty clothing and socks regularly

➟ Avoid sharing towels, footwear, razors, or hairbrushes

➟ Wear breathable footwear and clothing when possible

➟ Use antifungal medicines for the recommended duration, even if symptoms improve early

⠀

🟣 Seek Medical Advice If

➟ The infection is widespread, severe, or keeps returning

➟ The scalp or nails are involved

➟ You have diabetes or a weakened immune system

➟ The rash becomes painful, swollen, pus-filled, or associated with fever

➟ Symptoms do not improve with appropriate antifungal treatment
